Most of us treat our pets like
family members. So when we take a "family vacation" many times
this includes our pets. People often ask us what they need to
take with them to make their furry family members comfortable and
safe. First, you need to be aware that because they are in a
strange environment the risk of accidents increases. So to help
prepare for this possibility here are some things you should have on
hand in the event something unfortunate should happen while you are on
vacation:
- Bring extra tags with a local phone number, address and your cell
phone number. This way if your pet gets lost anyone finding them
can reach either your emergency contact at home or your cell
phone/local number where you are staying. If your pet has a
microchip make sure that you have the ID number and the number of the
microchip company written down and with you.
- You should always have a recent photo of your pet. It's
much easier to show a picture than try and describe what they look
like. Details can be overlooked especially when you are upset.
- You should always have your pet on a leash. Even if they do
not need one at home, they may act differently in a strange area.
For this reason we always encourage pet owner's to train their pet on a
leash so that when you have to use one, your pet is familiar with it.
- It is also helpful to bring a current copy of your pets'
medical records. If your pet should get sick while traveling this
will save valuable time by not having to call and get their health
history. Also the veterinarian treating them will know of any
existing medical conditions and/or adverse reactions to medications.
- Always make sure that however you are traveling your pet is in a
secure travel kennel. Never leave pets unattended or in
vehicles.
